Iran Parliament ratifies motion to counter US' 'terrorist' acts

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, who was sworn in for a second term earlier this month, called the nuclear deal "a sign of Iran's goodwill on the global stage".

As some lawmakers chanted "Death to America", Iran's parliament on August 13 granted its initial approval for increased funding of Teheran's missile program and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Quds Force.

Iranian lawmakers on Sunday overwhelmingly voted to approve a bill aimed at countering the new U.S. sanctions against the Islamic Republic.

"The Americans should know that this was our first action", speaker Ali Larijani said after announcing the voting results - according to the official Islamic Republic News Agency.

The measure would also allocate over $260 million each to Iran's ballistic missile program and the Quds Force - the external arm of the IRGC, which has sent military advisers to Iraq and Syria to fight terrorists.

Mr Trump has recently backed away from his key campaign promise to withdraw from the nuclear agreement.

Deputy foreign minister Abbas Araqchi told members of parliament that the government supported the new bill.

He was referring to a 2015 nuclear deal with world powers, known officially as the JCPOA, under which Iran agreed to strict limits on its nuclear programme in exchange for an easing of sanctions.

The motion was designed in view of continued bellicose policies of the United States towards Iran, and its persisting measures aimed at endangering peace and security in the region, it said. A string of close encounters between United States ships and Iranian vessels in the Gulf in recent months has added to the tensions between the two countries.

Iran's parliament has voted in favour of boosting investment in its missile defence and foreign operations programmes by more than $500m (£386m).

It will also require Iran's government and armed forces to draw up a plan to counter USA violations of human rights around the world and to support Iranian bodies and individuals affected by sanctions.
