Two dead in Kenya poll protests

Kenyatta emerged victor after securing 54.27 percent of the ballots cast, while his rival, Raila Odinga, won 44.74 percent of official figures released by the country's electoral commission on Friday.

"The Independent Policing and Oversight Authority (IPOA) must immediately launch an independent and effective investigation into reported killings and where there is credible evidence of crimes, those responsible must be brought to justice", said Muthoni Wanyeki, Amnesty International's Regional Director for East Africa, the Horn and the Great Lakes.

Kenyatta, the 55-year-old son of Kenya's first president after independence from Britain, appealed for calm and unity after the bitter campaign.

"President Kenyatta is not only a close friend and brother but also a development conscious and diligent leader", he said in a statement issued in Mogadishu.

After an acrimonious campaign, Kenyatta used his re-election speech to reach out to Odinga and his supporters on Friday night, saying he wanted to work with them "in the service of Kenya".

"The judicial process, the judicial system of Kenya and the election laws themselves make full and adequate provision for accountability in this election", said Kerry, an election observer for the Carter Center.

On Thursday, global election observers, such as former U.S Secretary of State John Kerry, termed the recent presidential and parliamentary polls in Kenya as credible. Katana says another five people were injured by gunfire in Kisumu. Youths also were reported to be throwing stones at cars in Kibera.

"There are gunshots all over; we don't know how it will end but we are praying for peace", said Kisumu resident Lucas Odhiambo, adding that people were bellowing through "vuvuzela" noisemakers when the results were announced "and police moved in". The family lives in Mathare, an area of Nairobi with many opposition supporters.

The election commission rejected claims by Odinga, a former prime minister, that its database was hacked and results were manipulated against him.

Three other people have died since Tuesday's vote, including two killed Wednesday after protests broke out in Nairobi and Kisumu. Odinga has alleged that the election was rigged.

The Kenyan opposition is harshly criticizing the government amid clashes between police and rioters that have killed a dozen people since the results of a disputed election were announced late Friday.
