The John Hopkins Hospital ranked as top hospital for rheumatoloy

Bringham and Women's Hospital, another top institution for care in Boston, was ranked second in the state.

Still, both have room for improvement. The study put 152 hospitals in the top 50 in at least one specialty area.

It's the sixth consecutive year that U.S. News has listed KU Hospital as the best hospital in the state and the 11 straight year the hospital has shown up in its Top 50 rankings of specialties.

Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., was once again recognized as the best hospital in the USA, followed by the Cleveland Clinic and Johns Hopkins Hospital.

Hershey Medical Center in Dauphin County ranked fourth statewide, making the national ranking in two adult specialties and four children's specialties, and recognized as high-performing in eight procedures or conditions.

Earlier this year, the Mayo Clinic stirred up controversy when CEO John Noseworthy told employees the health system would prioritize patients with private insurance over those with Medicaid if they seek care at the same time for similar conditions.


Number two in Maryland is the University of Maryland Medical Center, nationally ranked in three specialties, while number three, Mercy Medical Center, has a national ranking in orthopedics.

Earlier this summer, U.S. News ranked Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago the top children's hospital in IL and the 7th best children's hospital in the country. VUMC was lauded for seven adult specialties and 10 children's specialty procedures. The result is thousands of data points on hospitals that excel at treating the most challenging cases, those that do best in more routine procedures, like knee replacements, and those that provide top local care.

The "Best Hospitals" rankings are considered a trusted resource for consumers and a benchmarking tool for the healthcare industry. "We are proud of their contributions in making University of Colorado Hospital one of the nation's best hospitals, and we will continue to advance biomedical science and improve care for our patients and the community".

Orlando Health did not respond to an e-mail request for comment on Monday.

UCHealth's patients are 26% more likely to survive their illness, and they are receiving safer care compared to the national average.

The "America's Best Hospitals" issue is compiled using data collected annually on more than 5,000 US hospitals of varying sizes.
