Trump claims support is stronger than ever

The "phony Fake News polling", as Trump calls it, does throw cold water on the president's claims of a "bigger and stronger" base, however.

But it also noted that "it may prove hard for Kelly to prevail on Trump to bottle up his tweets at those who defy or criticize him ― or to refrain from expressing his outrage at the expanding investigations into possible ties between Russian Federation and the Trump campaign, a subject that's given rise to some of his most explosive statements". Look at rallies in Pennsylvania, Iowa, Ohio and West Virginia.

Trump was tweeting during his 17-day vacation from the White House.

US President Donald Trump gave every indication on Monday that he is digging in for the long haul, declaring that the large rallies he is holding showed his political base is "bigger & stronger than ever before" despite recent polling that shows a steep decline in support even among his favored constituency.

The poll also found support among white voters without a college degree-a key portion of Trump's base-have a dwindling view of the president's job performance.

The president said he is "working hard" from New Jersey and will head to NY next week "for more meetings". "They are telling him 'just enact your program".

"Hard to believe that with 24/7 #Fake News on CNN, ABC, NBC, CBS, NYTIMES & WAPO, the Trump base is getting stronger!" he tweeted.

White House spokeswoman Lindsay Walters said Monday that Trump will return to his hometown for part of the first half of next week.

Trump started at 62 per cent approval with this key group when he took office in January, but has since slipped from 56 per cent in May to 54 per cent in June and to 53 per cent in July. Former President George W. Bush sunk to the mid-20s, for instance, but it took eight years, two unpopular wars and a struggling economy to get there. The New York Times did not apologize for its Trump coverage.

On Aug. 2, a Quinnipiac University poll found that 33 percent of registered voters approved of Trump's job performance while 61 percent disapproved. It's a remarkable turn of events, considering that is the demographic who voted for the president in droves in November.
