Jay Cutler agrees to 1-year deal with Dolphins

First, quarterback Ryan Tannehill suffered a knee injury that could possibly end his 2017 season. After months of speculation, the Miami Dolphins signed Cutler to a one-year deal. When asked if he was officially retired, Cutler held back on using the word, while also saying the move would be "permanent". Before the Tannehill news, Cutler was all-in on his new broadcasting career.

That season, Cutler threw for 21 touchdowns and posted a quarterback rating of 92.3 which was a career high, but the most important stat was that Cutler only threw 11 interceptions that season.

But if Cutler manages to perform well for the Dolphins and - who knows - take them back to the playoffs, things could get weird going forward.

The Miami Dolphins, put in a position of dire need with an injury to Ryan Tannehill, are in the final stages of working out a one-year agreement that will bring Cutler, the former Chicago Bears quarterback, to South Florida, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports.

But while joining the Dolphins could appeal to Cutler in the short term, he risks damaging his broadcasting prospects long-term.

It's yet to be determined which is more impressive: Gase's work with Cutler in 2015 or his work this weekend in getting Cutler on board with playing for another season.

As of right now, Miami's best bet at replacing Tannehill is backup Matt Moore, though it seems the club's plans may change once it's clear exactly how long Tannehill will be sidelined.

It's not terribly surprising on Cutler's part because he had talked with the New York Jets and Houston Texans before deciding to head to the booth. "I'm in between those situations at this point in my life".

Aside from the connection between Gase and Cutler, Kaepernick generally doesn't fit the type of scheme Gase is looking to run in Miami.

One of Chicago's biggest issues was protecting Cutler, mainly because of a lack of strength from their offensive tackles.

Cutler's broadcast agent tweeted Saturday morning that Cutler hasn't made any decisions on whether he'd want to return.
