Dubai Torch Tower hit by fire again

An Associated Press journalist near the scene of early Friday's blaze said more than 40 floors of the high-rise tower appeared to be engulfed in flames on one side of the building.

Meanwhile, the officials have cordoned off the area near the building to ascertain the security of the people. In December 2015, the 63-storey building was damaged because of the fire.

Authorities said the tower had been evacuated and no injuries were reported.

That fire, and other recent blazes in the city, spread quickly because of external cladding, according to fire engineering consultancy Tenable Dubai.

At 3.30am, the Dubai Media Office confirmed that the blaze was extinguished. Several residents fled the building after the fire ripped through the building.

The government said it is working on providing shelter for the ones affected by the fire.

It's still unclear what caused Friday morning's torch tower fire and whether cladding played a role.

When the firefighters brought the blaze under control, the Dubai Civil Defense began cooling operations.

The United Arab Emirates issued new fire safety rules earlier this year that requires buildings with flammable cladding to be retrofitted with fire-resistant panels.

The combination of cheap combustible cladding and insulation has been blamed for the deadly spread of the June 14 fire in west London, which killed at least 80 people.

It marks the second fire at the skyscraper in the world-famous Marina district, with an eerily similar incident two years ago. The fire sent chunks of debris crashing to the ground.

Another resident, whose gave his name as Mohammed and lives on the 12th floor, said the top part of the tower caught fire first and then lower levels followed as debris fell.
