Eight people injured as van rams into diners, driver arrested

The impact sent one auto into the sidewalk, he added, striking a group of people dining in a restaurant patio.

Los Angeles Fire Department said that nine people were assessed at the scene and eight were transported.

A witness at the scene said the van jumped a curb and careened into a group of people eating outside The Fish Spot restaurant in the city's Mid-Wilshire neighborhood. The impact of the crash sent the Ford van through a picket fence outside the restaurant, then through tables packed with diners on the patio. Police say they do not believe the driver was under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

A witness told the Associated Press that several victims were pinned beneath the van and one man appeared to have severe head injuries. According to Barlow, the as yet unidentified man was arrested on suspicion of felony hit-and-run. At least one of the victims was in critical condition.
