Restrictions are no longer in effect for the last of 10 airports with USA bound flights that had a ban on electronic devices.
The Trump administration enacted the ban in March, citing concerns that terrorists could use portable electronic devices to set off bombs during flights.
David Lapan, a spokesman for the DHS, said the ban was lifted due to additional security measures that have been issued to all airlines and airports serving as last points of departure to the U.S. around the world.
A US intelligence official told CBS News that the new ban was put in place because of an intelligence report that found a terrorist plot seeking to use explosives hidden in a laptop to destroy a commercial flight.
Kelly said the newly announced policy requiring airports to adopt tougher security rules to avoid a ban on electronic devices in the cabin was not a compromise between security and convenience.
"We tested it on a real airplane on the ground, pressurized, and to say the least, it destroyed the airplane", he said.
The Department of Homeland Security announced yesterday on Twitter the official lifting of the ban.
Homeland Security imposed the laptop ban from the Middle East in March and threatened to expand it to more than 280 airports worldwide unless all of them carried out the intensified screenings.
Officials released a statement to CBS News saying communication between the DHS and Transportation Security Agency led to the increase in airline safety. Those enhanced measures were verified by US officials before the ban was lifted.
Travelers flying to the US from almost 300 worldwide airports, including those in Mexico and Canada, are now subject to stepped-up security measures that include stricter screening for electronic devices larger than cellphones.
The new measures may include asking passengers to present larger electronic devices for inspection and prove they can be powered on.
