Bill Belichick congratulates 'tough Croatian' Rob Ninkovich on tremendous career

Speculation on the 33-year-old's status for the upcoming season heightened when he didn't appear for the first day of Patriots' training camp.

Ninkovich is expected to announce his retirement on Sunday, according to ESPN's Mike Reiss.

#Rob Ninkovich issued a statement at the conference with the team on Sunday.

The eleven year veteran spoke in front of media at a scheduled press conference, announcing his retirement as well as expressing his thanks to the New England organization and fans. I hope I can take that knowledge you've given me over the years, and if I'm coaching or in football or doing something, and pass it on to the next group of guys.

Ninkovich began his career with the New Orleans Saints, and called his release from the Saints a "blessing" for how it allowed him to begin his career with the Pats.

Ninkovich played in 44.3 percent of the defensive snaps in 2016, which was lower than his norm, in part because he served a four-game suspension to open the season after a positive test for a banned substance he said was from an over-the-counter supplement. "I've never coached a more unselfish player, and I've coached a lot of them. Nick [Caserio] said 'There's a guy, Rob, he should be on a roster, he should be in a camp and he's available so let's get him.' Really, it's just history after that". "I look forward to the next phase of my life".

"I love it here, and I'm going to miss it".

New England's depth chart includes Trey Flowers, who led the team with seven sacks last season, newcomer Kony Ealy, acquired in a trade with Carolina, Geneo Grissom and rookies Derek Rivers and Deatrich Wise Jr.

"He's had a fabulous career", Payton said. If I am not mistaken early in his career he bounced around a little bit and been cut a couple of times. "Congratulations to him and his career".
