Eight people found dead in Texas truck, possibly human trafficking case

The injured people have been transported to hospitals with possibly life-threatening injuries, according to KENS5.

Another 30 people, many suffering from heat stoke and exhaustion, were with the bodies in the trailer, which lacked air conditioning or a water supply, San Antonio Fire Chief Charles Hood said.

"We're looking at a human trafficking crime", McManus said. The US Department of Homeland Security was involved in the investigation of the incident, he said.

The employee gave the person the water and then called police.

Barr also declined to identify the employee who asked police to conduct a welfare check on the truck.

A USA official says the death toll from people found in the back of a sweltering tractor-trailer in the parking lot of a San Antonio Walmart has risen to 10.

"With heat stroke, you sometimes have neurological deficits that you're never going to be able to recover from".

Temperatures on Saturday reached 101, and were in the 90s in the hours before the bodies were found, authorities said. Four of the passengers are believed to be between 10 and 17 years old, and at least one of them is in serious condition.

Medical personnel declared 8 people deceased on the scene. The least-severe cases, he said, just needed to be re-hydrated.

"Our paramedics and firefighters found that each patient had heart rates over about 130 beats per minute and were very hot to the touch", Hood said.

Authorities said they still don't know the origin of the truck, or how long it had been parked at the Walmart, and that the search for such details are part of an active investigation now underway. "These networks have repeatedly shown a reckless disregard for those they smuggle". Among the people inside the trailer, two were school-aged children.

Some survivors also ran when they heard police sirens and helicopters.

A smuggling incident turned deadly at a Walmart in Texas Saturday night. "This happens quite frequently under cover of night".

Authorities have not said whether the rig was locked when cops arrived, or whether it was used to smuggle the almost 40 people across the border into the US. "And fortunately there are people that survived". Police officers were the ones who found the people inside the tractor-trailer. A company official did not immediately respond to a phone message seeking comment. First responders say there were so many victims, they had to be spread among seven different hospitals. The men and women of ICE are proud to stand alongside our law enforcement partners, including locally and at the U.S. Department of Justice, to combat these smuggling networks and protect the public and those who would fall victim to their risky practices that focus exclusively on their illicit profits.
