U.S. hits Iran with new economic sanctions

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the USA treasury department said it is imposing the new sanctions against Iran over its ballistic missile programme and for contributing to regional tensions. The sanctions freeze any assets in the USA and prevent Americans from doing business with them.

The back-to-back actions reflect the policy crosscurrents for President Trump in trying to reconcile his campaign promises with the realities of foreign policy governance.

However, global inspectors have not been allowed to inspect the hidden nuclear sites that were uncovered by the Iranian Resistance group, the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI). "Nuclear weapons do not augment anybody's security". He's right, for the excellent reason that Iran is not, in fact, complying with the agreement.

But it has not relieved tensions between Tehran and Washington, which continue to clash particularly over conflicts in the Middle East like Syria and Yemen, where Iran-backed militias hold clout.

"The Americans should be aware that their measures are against the Iranian nation, but the nation is firmly resolved to counteract the USA acts".

"The United States remains deeply concerned about Iran's malign activities across the Middle East, which undermine regional stability, security and prosperity", it added.

The nuclear agreement's terms are limited to the nuclear weaponry issue.

"We need our missiles to make sure that another Saddam Hussein won't hit us again...we don't have nuclear warheads". The certification is required every 90 days. This is the second time Trump's government has done so.

US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said that the sanctions show that the Trump administration will continue to act "aggressively" against Iran's "provocative and destabilizing behavior".

"The president has made very clear his desire to fix the many flaws in the deal".

The New York Times also reported that Trump's top security advisers - including Tillerson, Defense Secretary Jim Mattis and National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster - assembled at an hourlong meeting last Wednesday to convince the president to re-certify.

But the day came and went with no such announcement, although officials said they expected more sanctions would eventually be coming. The penalties are the latest in a long list of attempts to punish Tehran.

"Moving forward, the administration intends to employ a strategy that will address the totality of Iran's malign behavior and not just focus on the nuclear deal", the official told AP.

And because of that, the USA announced more than a dozen new sanctions against groups or individuals linked to the country.

"These sanctions target procurement of advanced military hardware, such as fast attack boats and unmanned aerial vehicles, and send a strong signal that the United States can not and will not tolerate Iran's provocative and destabilizing behavior".

While the agreement allowed Iran to enrich and store some uranium for energy production, it had to reduce uranium stockpiles by 96 percent, idle many enrichment centrifuges and pour concrete into its heavy-water nuclear reactor.

The State Department also called on the Iranian government to release USA citizens Baquer Namazi, Siamak Namazi, Xiyue Wang and other "unjustly detained U.S. citizens" and said it was deeply concerned about reports of their declining health.
