Michael Bloomberg and Governor of California launch new United States climate action plan

A major initiative to measure US efforts to cut carbon emissions was announced today in a joint statement by California Governor Jerry Brown and former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

It will see the Carbon dioxide reduction commitments of those involved aggregated in order to provide a roadmap for increased climate ambition from USA states, cities and businesses in order to help the U.S. deliver on its Paris Agreement pledges, despite President Trump's promise to leave the accord.

Building on this positive momentum, the America's Pledge initiative will for the first time aggregate the commitments of these and other "non-Party actors" in a report on the full range of climate-related activities across the whole of USA society.

Climate action will continue to happen in the US thanks to action by cities, states, businesses, and grassroots advocates, including the Sierra Club and our Beyond Coal and Ready For 100 Campaigns.

The plan would be the first to quantify the work of cities, states, and businesses, underscoring the wider effort to keep the U.S.in line with previous Paris agreement pledges without the support of the federal government.

"Together, we are showing the world it's possible to protect our planet while also creating good-paying jobs and growing our economies", the governor said.

"The American government may have pulled out of the Paris agreement, but American society remains committed to it - and we will redouble our efforts to achieve its goals", Michael Bloomberg, a United Nations special envoy for cities and climate change and coalition leader, said in a statement. "We're already halfway there".

The new pledge includes 227 cities and counties, 9 states and around 1,650 investors and businesses who aim to pursue the country's initial commitment to reduce its GHG emissions by 26 to 28 per cent by 2025 compared to 2005 levels.

While launching a website and uniting a dozen-plus USA territories are relatively small achievements, the rhetoric is likely to play big across Long Island, where funding for and commercialization of "clean energy" technologies have become socioeconomic lifelines - and environmentalists, economists and other observers lambasted Trump's decision to pull out of the Paris Agreement.

That historically bad move by Trump has ceded USA leadership on fighting climate disruption to other countries, and has even caused some to refer to the global alliance of powers as the G-19, signaling our lack of leadership on the world stage as humanity faces an unprecedented threat.

Outside experts with the World Resources Institute and the Rocky Mountain Institute, two USA -based non-profits, have been retained to conduct the study on current and projected emissions of "America's Pledge" affiliates.

Finally, the America's Pledge will present a game plan for raising the bar and expanding the map when it comes to non-Party actors driving down USA emissions. The American government may have pulled out of the Paris Agreement, but American society remains committed to it - and we will redouble our efforts to achieve its goals.

Former New York mayor and current United Nations Secretary-General's Special Envoy for Cities and Climate Change, Bloomberg declared, "Reducing emissions is good for the economy and good for public health". "If the federal government insists on abdicating leadership on this issue, it will be up to the American people to step forward - and in Virginia we are doing just that". "The effort to aggregate and quantify the actions of subnational authorities and non-Party stakeholders in the United States via "America's Pledge" is welcome".
