Parents still fighting for Charlie Gard's treatment

Charlie, who is 11 months old, has a rare and debilitating genetic condition that has no cure.

The parents of a terminally-ill British baby boy on Sunday delivered a petition of over 350 000 signatures demanding they be allowed to take him to the United States for treatment.

It affects the cells responsible for energy production and respiration, leaving him unable to move or breathe without a ventilator. We feel it should be our right as parents to decide to give him a chance at life.

Charlie's parents, from Bedfont, West London, are steeling themselves for a long hearing at the High Court on Monday.

Pope Francis last week expressed his support for the baby's parents and said he hoped doctors would allow them to "care for their child until the end". However, doctors at Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH), where he's being kept alive have been denying the parents the right to try and save their child and United Kingdom and European courts have backed them up.

Along with Charlie's father Chris Gard, she had earlier vowed that the fight for their baby to receive experimental treatment was "not over".

But according to the BBC, doctors at GOSH are reconsidering their decision and have applied for a new court hearing to consider new evidence about the experimental treatment.

Also speaking outside the hospital, USA lawyer Catherine Glenn Foster said: This new evidence involves the therapy itself and the percent success rate, and the likelihood that it will significantly help Charlie.

It said its doctors had "explored every medical treatment" and that further treatment "would be unjustified. and would prolong Charlie's suffering".

Ms Yates added: "If he's still fighting, we're still fighting".

Speaking outside Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) on Sunday, his parents said: "He's our son, he's our flesh and blood". The hospital also offered to ship the experimental drug to Great Ormond Street Hospital.

On Tuesday, the Vatican-owned Bambino Gesu Children's Hospital in Italy said it had been in touch with the London hospital "to verify whether the health conditions exist to possibly transfer Charlie to our hospital", said Mariella Enoc, president of the hospital, in a statement.

GOSH describes experimental nucleoside therapies as "unjustified" but its decision comes after two global hospitals and their researchers contacted them "as late as the last 24 hours" to say they have "fresh evidence about their proposed experimental treatment".

This is an undated hand out photo of Charlie Gard provided by his family, at Great Ormond Street Hospital, in London.

GOSH said its view of treatment, however, had not changed - but that it believed it was right to seek the view of the High Court.

But it said officials have met with Charlie's parents to let them know about the requested new hearing.

The petition comes as two US congressmen have promised to introduce a bill that would give the baby and his parents lawful permanent residency status in the United States, so the boy can undergo treatment in the country.
