Geraint Thomas out of Tour de France with suspected broken collarbone

Geraint Thomas is out of the Tour De France after suffering a suspected broken collarbone during a crash.

He was one of many to fall on stage nine, along with Rafal Majka (Bora-Hansgrohe), Robert Gesink (LottoNL-Jumbo) and Richie Porte (BMC Racing). "We hope both guys are both okay", said Froome's Sky team on Twitter.

And yet the Tour had started so well for the 31-year-old Briton, who won the opening stage time-trial, his first ever Tour stage victory, and held the yellow jersey for four days before giving it up to Froome on Wednesday's fifth stage.

Froome's other rivals followed the Italian, seemingly in order to remonstrate with him and tell him to wait.

Martin crashed in to the back of Richie Porte after the Australian went off the road into a wall of rocks on the final descent to the stage finish at Chambery.

"He was at the inside of me a few times on the corners, just desperate to get around me". I just don't know what Majka was doing.

After being caught in Porte's crash, Martin fell again on the way to the foot of the mountain, and the Quick-Step Floors rider made his feelings clear about a stage design with such a strong emphasis on high-speed descending.

However, organisers said he was conscious and speaking but was being taken to hospital.

Frenchman Romain Bardet (Ag2R-La Mondiale) and Astana duo Aru and Jakob Fuglsang completed the top six before a chasing group including Colombian Nairo Quintana (Movistar) came home one minute 15 seconds down.

With four bonus seconds on the line for third place, Froome extended his lead over Aru to 18 seconds.

He beat France's Warren Barguil (Team Sunweb) after a photo finish.

The numerous crashes led some to question whether the stage was too risky.
