Tim Hardaway Jr. will be Knicks' $71M man

Guard Tim Hardaway Jr.is apparently headed back to NY after the Atlanta Hawks opted not to match the massive $71 million (62 million euros) the Knicks offered the restricted free agent.

The Knicks signed shooting guard Courtney Lee to a four-year, $48 million deal last summer, but the team has no plans to trade him at this point as the Knicks believe Lee and Hardaway Jr. can play well together given the value of shooting in today's National Basketball Association, sources confirmed.

Although all four players will be of significance to the long-term vision, all eyes are on Hardaway Jr. and whether or not he'll be able to build upon his 2016-17 success.

Tim Hardaway Jr. will be a Knick again. Hardaway, 25, was originally drafted by the Knicks 24th overall in the 2013 NBA Draft. NY proceeded to trade Hardaway to Atlanta on draft night in 2015.

New York's offer sheet includes an unusual provision requiring the team to pay 50 percent of Hardaway's annual salary by October 1 of every season, according to league sources. The following year, Hardaway upped his scoring average by posting 11.5 points per game, but he shot just 38.9 percent from the field and 34.2 percent from downtown.

Mills has all but confirmed the youth movement in his explanation of the Hardaway Jr. signing. The Knicks acquired Jerian Grant in that deal, who they flipped to the Bulls a year later in the Derrick Rose trade. He'll space out as a shooter next to rookie Frank Ntilikina, but it's tough to imagine that NY couldn't have found another player for a much cheaper price. The terms are unknown.

The Knicks can start him with Courtney Lee, who signed a $50 million deal last summer, with each player moving between shooting guard and small forward.

The room exception, a small amount of cap space and veteran's exceptions are the only tools the Knicks now have to offer free agents.

The Knicks have made many baffling personnel moves in the past decade-plus.

The immediate need for the Knicks, even if they have few illusions of contending this season, is a veteran point guard to serve as a mentor the team's lottery pick - 18-year-old Frank Ntilikina.
