Online giant gives 'voice shoppers' first dibs on Prime Day deals

Another point worth exploring is just how rare a deal actually is on any particular item.

You should know that Amazon's Prime Day is the biggest online sale of the year and it will start on July 11th. Alexa, which you might call the breakout tech star of 2017, can mostly be found doing her thing on the Amazon Echo smart speakers.

Amazon has given a few hints about what's to come.

First, you need to be a Prime member. If you're a paying member of the service (or have covertly signed up to its 30-day free trial) the company is promising that "hundreds of thousands" of deals will be announced between 10-11 July. From 9 p.m. EST on July 10 until 3 a.m. EST on July 12, you can spend 30 hours recklessly throwing items into your online cart, wondering, "Am I really saving money?"

Ask Alexa the question "Alexa, what are your deals?".

However, the results yesterday showing it will be doing it again, said Greg Greeley, Amazon Prime vice president. Amazon gained plenty of buzz (and some criticism over the quality and quantity of deals).

With new deals as often as every five minutes, this year Prime Day has expanded to 13 countries: the US, UK, Spain, Mexico, Japan, Italy, India, Germany, France, China, Canada, Belgium and Austria.

In addition to the Alexa deals, Prime members can enjoy voice-only promotions. Tap "Watch this deal" to get an alert when a deal is starting so you can snap it up before it's gone.

For those who have Prime, Amazon is allowing early access to Prime Day deals, as long as you own an Alexa device.

"We have deals on everything from smart home products to devices, chocolates and more starting today and going all the way through July 17", said Assaf Ronen, VP voice shopping.

The voice assistant now has more than 15,000 "skills" (Amazon's term for voice-based apps), almost all of them created in the little more than two years since Amazon opened Alexa to outside developers. It costs £79 a year, which includes more than just access to a sale. But the company did say there will be some "amazing" deals on a "variety" of television brands - including the Amazon Fire TV edition of the ultra high-definition Element 4K TV. Last year, Amazon beefed up inventory.
