Merkel's rival Schulz calls for ban on Turkish president Erdogan holding rally

"It is regrettable that some politicians in Germany are making unacceptable comments with domestic political calculations", Reuters cited Turkey's foreign ministry spokesman, Huseyin Muftuoglu, as saying.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Thursday requested permission to address a gathering of his compatriots on the sidelines of a G20 meeting set to be held in Hamburg starting July 7, but his request was met with opposition from several senior German lawmakers, Efe news reported.

"We must tackle this existential challenge, and we can not wait until every last person on Earth has been convinced of the scientific proof", said Dr Merkel, who cut her political teeth chairing talks that eventually lead to the Kyoto Agreement.

Aside from Erdogan, President Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin are both set to attend the July 7-8 gathering, which will draw 41 delegations from countries and global organizations.

Germany's chief federal prosecutor in January launched an investigation into possible spying by clerics sent to Germany by the Turkish government, and in March opened a second, unrelated probe into suspected espionage.

Turkish media outlets reported that Germany stands against Erdogan's speech to be delivered to representatives of the Turkish community.

The dpa news agency reported Thursday that Sigmar Gabriel said, while on a trip to Russian Federation, that Turkey had officially requested permission for Erdogan to make the appearance while in Germany for the July 7-8 summit.

The issue has spilled over to Germany, where Erdogan also filed a case against a satirist Jan Boehmermann who read a poem containing some obscene language on a television show, which raised freedom of speech issues in the European country. "This includes foreign security forces", Hamburg Senator Andy Grote told Die Welt.

In July, Turkey will mark one year since the failed coup attempt, which exacerbated an already far-reaching crackdown against critics of the government, and has led foreign goverments to distance themselves from Turkey. The two countries are North Atlantic Treaty Organisation partners, but Germany has made a decision to relocate its aircraft from Turkey's Incirlik airbase.

The German government also demanded the Turkish president not include in his security team the security bodyguards who face arrest warrants in the USA for attacking protesters in Washington during Erdogan's visit to the country on May 16.

The refusal prompted German parliament to decide to move their military installations from the key Incirlik airbase in Turkey.
