Goodwin Fire Near Mayer Burns More Than 4000 Acres

Several small communities have been warned to be ready to evacuate.

Many residents have painful memories of the 2013 wildfire that killed 19 members of an elite firefighting crew.

The National Interagency Fire Center said Thursday that six states including Arizona, California and New Mexico are dealing with "multiple large fires", with more than 8 thousand firefighters and support workers battling the blazes.

Local authorities are investigating the incident.

Yavapai County Emergency Management Coordinator Denny Foulk said there are about 2,000 residents in the area affected by the fire and 3,000 structures in the evacuated area were at risk but officials were not immediately sure how many are homes.

More than 500 firefighters were battling the blaze.

Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey released a statement saying the Goodwin Fire was the state's "top priority".

State fire officials canceled the evacuation orders for dozens of homes on Tuesday night.

Fire managers said Thursday that 25-mph wind gusts have pushed the wildfire near Brian Head to more than 91 square miles (236 square kilometres ), though firefighters have increased containment to 15 per cent.

On California's Central Coast, evacuation orders remain in place for sparsely populated rural areas of San Luis Obispo County east of the town of Santa Margarita due to a almost 2-square-mile (5 sq. kilometer) fire.

Those statistics don't count any of the fires that began burning in June, including the 27 fires now burning across 11 states.

The blaze, dubbed the Goodwin Fire, has charred 21,000 acres and destroyed a number of homes since starting on Saturday in the Prescott National Forest, 70 miles north of Phoenix.

"Once arriving, Brush 10 and its staff will check into the staging location where they will then be assigned out to a fire", East Fork Fire Marshal Steve Eisele said.

Elsewhere across the western US, a fire in the foothills north of Los Angeles was burned right up to homes before the blaze was beaten back.

Firefighters are establishing a perimeter around Mayer, a town of 1,400 residents. The fire was reported about 2 miles (3.2 kilometers) west of Durango on Wednesday afternoon.

Officials say that fire crews are expected to face dry, windy conditions Tuesday and a "high potential" for extreme fire behavior.

The blaze is burning in thick chaparral that has not seen a fire in more than 40 years. It's also in steep, rugged terrain that makes it hard for firefighters to reach.
