McEnroe: Williams would be ranked 'like 700' on men's tour

Her 23 Grand Slam titles are second only to Margaret Court, who won 24 Grand Slams between 1960 and 1973. You know, why say female player?

Retired tennis player John McEnroe said Serena Williams would be "like 700" in the world tennis rankings if she played in the men's tour.

In the past, John McEnroe has heaped praise upon Serena Williams, previously saying she "greatest female player he's ever seen", but now he'd like the clarify his statements.

Williams has indicated that she will return to play after the birth of her child, at the start of next year.

McEnroe went on to say that maybe at some point a female tennis player could be better than anybody.

In one of her tweets, Williams wrote: "I've never played anyone ranked "there" nor do I have time".

Of course, there's no discussing modern tennis without talking about Serena Williams - one of the most famous, successful and decorated tennis players in the history of the sport.

He added: "That doesn't mean I don't think Serena is like an incredible player".

When asked about it on television, Williams had to admit she didn't think she'd have a chance.

"If I were to play Andy Murray, I would lose 6-0, 6-0 in five to six minutes, maybe 10 minutes. No, it's true. It's a completely different sport", she said. "I suppose anything is possible at some stage", he added. So Andy, stop it.

Not only that, but he thinks that Williams, whose 39 grand slam titles across singles, doubles, and mixed doubles place her third all time regardless of gender, would be ranked somewhere around 700 in the world if she was to compete with men instead of women. And that is to say nothing of why it is predominately white men who continue to seem so defensive about the unbridled dominance of a strong black woman.

But then again, there's the physical difference between men and women.

She won the Australian Open in January while pregnant, before she announced her pregnancy publicly. It doesn't take much bravery to take the stance that Williams is the greatest female tennis player ever. During an appearance on NPR's "Weekend Edition on Sunday", McEnroe was asked about Williams by host Lulu Garcia-Navarro.

When rating the greatness of a woman athlete, why do we feel compelled to pull her out of her arena of competition and see how she would fare against men?
