Iranian FM calls US travel ban 'misplaced'

The Supreme Court of the United States said that this fall it will hear a case involving President Donald Trump's travel ban, which seeks to delay entry into the country by immigrants from six majority-Muslim countries and one that suspends, for a time, the entry of all refugees.

"It allows the travel suspension for the six terror-prone countries and the refugee suspension to become largely effective", he said.

Travelers walk near a sign for global arrivals at the Seattle-Tacoma worldwide Airport, Monday, June 26, 2017, in Seattle.

Until the new guidance is complete, posts were told to process applications as they had been previously, according to the officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss internal communications publicly.

The ban will come into force partially in the next 72 hours, based on a memorandum issued by the Trump Administration [VIDEO] on June 14.

But the justices said those who already have a connection to the USA - either a job offer, an admission to an educational program or a close family connection - will be exempted from the 90-day ban on travel from six countries as well as the 120-day pause on refugees.

The Department of Homeland Security said in a communique that it will provide more details regarding implementation of the ban after consulting with the State and Justice Departments.

The Trump administration said the 90-day ban was needed to allow an internal review of the screening procedures for visa applicants from those countries.

What qualifies as a "bona fide" connection?

A woman pushes a stroller near a sign for worldwide arrivals at the Seattle-Tacoma global Airport, Monday, June 26, 2017, in Seattle.

Hassan, a 25-year-old who was accepted to the University of Virginia and was heading to Cyprus on Tuesday for a visa interview, said he sees "no reason to be worried" since the ban would not apply to students.

The Department of Homeland Security hasn't offered any guidance on how this week's Supreme Court ruling on the ban will be interpreted, so attorneys are preparing for anything and will monitor airports from Los Angeles to NY in case they are needed to assist foreigners held for questioning or denied entry by customs and border agents.

That is because the high court effectively allowed Trump to ban from coming to the United States only citizens of six majority-Muslim countries "who lack any bona fide relationship with a person or entity in the United States".

Iranians apply for USA visas in neighboring countries because Washington and Tehran have had no diplomatic relations since the 1979 revolution.

Transit refugees or those who already have a permit may travel to the United States under this executive order. After all, in agreeing to hear the case in October, the justices could have left the temporary stay in place pending a final ruling.

The fate of refugees, who often don't have relatives or jobs waiting for them in the US, also hangs in the balance.
