Alabama military post on lockdown after possible shooter

An active active shooter situation has taken place at Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, Alabama.

The base's official Twitter account reported there is a possible active shooter. "This is not a drill".

All gates are locked at Redstone Arsenal, a post near Huntsville. Moments later she tweeted "All Gates Are Now Open".

The installation remains on lockdown at this point.

Earlier, Colster had said the report of a shooter was not part of any exercise.

Redstone Arsenal boasts some 40,000 workers, primarily civilian and contract employees.

The base is the army's centre for rockets and missiles and is also home to the NASA Marshall Space Flight Centre.

Huntsville hospital officials said they had not heard of any incoming patients, local TV stations reported.

Holliday said 911 received two calls from the Sparkman Center around 9 a.m., one saying shots were fired and the other saying someone saw a weapon.

Representatives Robert Aderholt and Mo Brooks say that they are monitoring the situation and praying for the safety of all those on the base. "I will continue to closely monitor and pray for a peaceful and quick resolution", she said.

While there is no word on any injuries or casualties at this time, ambulances were seen responding to Redstone.

Redstone Arsenal spokesman Christopher Colster said the installation near Huntsville was in the process of readying for an active shooter drill that was to end Wednesday when the alert was sounded. Many of these units are moving due to decisions by the Defense Base Realignment and Closure Commission. "And also this would include Redstone Arsenal who has also been associated with this case". Redstone served as the primary site for space launch vehicle design into the 1960s.

The Redstone Arsenal is military installation in northern Alabama.
