Faced with mounting criticism, British PM visits London fire victims

Firefighters searching the smouldering ruin in west London have recovered six bodies from the 24-story Grenfell Tower, while 11 others have been located but can not yet be removed from the gutted structure.

At least 30 people were killed in the fire at Grenfell Tower in the west London neighbourhood of north Kensington. London firefighters combed through the burned-out public housing tower Thursday in a grim search for missing people as police and the prime minister launched investigations into the deadly inferno, with pressure building on officials to explain the disaster and assure that similar buildings around the country are safe. He asked anyone who was in the tower and survived to contact police immediately.

British authorities are launching a criminal investigation into the London apartment building fire - as the death toll from the blaze has almost doubled, to 30. Nothing. Enough is enough, I have got friends in that tower.

"His dream was to be able to go back home one day and rebuild Syria". "Nobody was helping him".

Around 70 people are missing, according to Britain's Press Association, and identification of the victims is proving very hard.

Today, Prime Minister Theresa May announced a 5 million pound ($6.4 million) fund to help the families impacted by the fire, and The Associated Press reports that it "includes a guarantee to rehouse people as close as possible to where they previously lived".

"This morning I woke up to the news that they found him".

Outside, crowds applauded members of the London Fire Brigade, Metropolitan Police and London Ambulance Service as they lined up to be thanked for their bravery by the royal visitors.

Some residents had warned months ago that the tower represented a unsafe fire risk.

He warned that the figure could rise as it is not known exactly who was in the building when the fire took hold of the tower block on Wednesday. Cundy said emergency workers have now reached the top of the tower.

"There will be many questions about this whole incident and so you will appreciate that it would not be appropriate for us to comment or for others to speculate on any aspect of fire, or it causes, in advance of these inquiries", managing director Ray Bailey said. However, there may be other people who were in there on the night that others were not aware were there.

"The fire started on the fourth floor from a fridge, I can be sure of that because I know the neighbour". We are going to be inviting them and Essential Living to the Housing Overview and Scrutiny panel on July 12.

The fire forced residents to flee through black smoke down the single stairwell, jump out of windows or even drop their children to safety.

The fire at the 24-story building has led to community anger and protests over the British government's response. Churches and community centers are providing meals and support, and donations of clothing, toys and household supplies are flooding in.

"I do sense the anger", Conservative lawmaker Andrea Leadsom said as she faced the fury of local residents during a tour of the site.

Omar Salha, one of those coordinating at the mosque, told Al Jazeera the response was "overwhelming".

Cundy said the recovery of bodies, assisted by sniffer dogs, may not be completed for weeks.

Yesterday angry residents protested to demand answers and justice while others scrawled on walls to tell Mrs May to stay away.

"It's a state of shock to be honest".
