Britain-EU Brexit talks to start Monday as planned

The senior official at the Department for Exiting the European Union, Olly Robbins, has been in Brussels this week for preliminary talks.

At least six people died and dozens were injured when a massive fire tore through a 24-story London apartment block overnight, a fresh blow to the capital less than two weeks after the London Bridge terror attack. A spokesman for May's Downing Street office refused to discuss the talks.

On a visit to Paris on Tuesday evening where she met with French President Emmanuel Macron, May described the talks with the DUP as "productive".

That the British were ready to break negotiations down on the lines of priorities identified by Brussels implied, he said, a willingness to start a first phase of divorce talks before moving on next year to a second phase on the new free trade relationship May wants - a "sequencing" London has disputed. In April, she was tempted by opinion polls that put her Conservative Party 20 points ahead of its Labour rival, and she called the snap election. "There's no doubt about that, but perhaps an opportunity to consult more widely with the other parties on how best we can achieve it", he said at a conference in Poland.

Barnier speaks of a willingness to look at various options but EU officials also stress that greater access to EU markets will mean accepting greater costs, closer to EU membership, and question whether Britain can find a political consensus on that.

Christian Bluth, from the German-based Bertelsmann Foundation, said the foundation expects the British departure from the European Union to have the strongest economic impact on Ireland, followed by Britain.

"It's passing quicker than anyone believes". "Theresa's atrocious campaign has cast a shadow over these facts", said Farage, who assured that "there is a certainty in this whole bazaar: we will leave the European Union". "I can't negotiate with myself", he told European newspapers including the Financial Times.

Barnier dismissed the suggestion of postponing the negotiations and said such a delay would only prompt further instability.

The EU's executive Commission said in a statement Friday that the first round of negotiations in Brussels will be part of a "sequenced approach to the talks".

While the DUP are deeply eurosceptic, they have balked at some of the practical implications of a so-called hard Brexit - including a potential loss of a "frictionless border" with the Republic of Ireland - and talks will touch on efforts to minimize the potential damage to Northern Ireland.

They would not form a coalition.

Nevertheless, it illustrated the challenge May will face in the remaining days before the European Union divorce talks begin: finding a position that satisfies both pro-European and eurosceptic factions of her party if she wants to remain in power.

Even with a deal nearing to secure her government's survival, May is so weakened that her Brexit strategy has become the subject of public debate inside her own party, with two former prime ministers urging her to soften her approach.

Irish nationalist party Sinn Fein said the prospect of a British agreement with the DUP was causing anxiety and fear.
