Pence hires outside legal counsel

Pence announced his travel plans Thursday as he spoke at a conference in Miami focused on Central America.

"I can confirm that the Vice President has retained Richard Cullen of McGuire Woods to assist him in responding to inquiries by the special counsel", Agen wrote.

Pence has retained Virginia attorney Richard Cullen, who previously served as a U.S. attorney in the Eastern District of Virginia, spokesman Jarrod Agen said.

According to the Washington Post, Vice President Mike Pence has retained outside counsel to handle inquiries related to special counsel Robert Mueller's Russian Federation probe. He also served as special counsel to Virginia Sen.

An aide tells NPR the decision to hire an outside lawyer has been under consideration for weeks, and Pence chose to go forward with it earlier this week.

Cullen previously served as Virginia attorney general and US attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia.

Cullen also served as special counsel to U.S. Senator Paul Trible (R-VA) during the Iran-Contra investigation and was on the staff of Rep. M. Caldwell Butler (R-VA) during the Watergate investigation. Many expect Trump to roll back several policies and actions from former President Barack Obama done in an effort to help thaw relations between the two nations.

The Washington Post was first to report the news. He launched into a new Twitter tirade against it Thursday morning, calling it "phony" and the "single greatest with hunt in American political history".

Pence chaired the president's transition after the election - a period during which Trump's former national security adviser Michael Flynn had repeated contact with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak.

Scrutiny of the president's actions has intensified since he fired Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey last month.
