Harry Kane: 'I want to be England captain full time'

Harry Kane's injury-time goal gave England a 2-2 draw after a insane finish to their World Cup qualifier against Scotland on Saturday with Leigh Griffiths having struck twice for the home side in the final three minutes.

England were on course for victory after substitute Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain took advantage of some weak defending and goalkeeping in the 70th minute after Craig Gordon had needlessly conceded a throw-in.

For Kane, captaining England for the first time, the experience was one to remember.

Kane, who was handed the captain's armband for the first time, said: "I would say that is probably the most special moment for me".

However, Kane - wearing the captain's armband on the night - hit back in stoppage time to rescue a draw for the visitors and keep them two points clear at the top of World Cup qualifying Group F.

"If we can put performances in like we did against England and Slovenia (1-0 win in March) then I think we will get the Tartan Army right behind us and if we do, Hampden is never a good place to come to".

Gareth Southgate is looking to name a new skipper now that Wayne Rooney's worldwide career is seemingly winding down, and Kane staked his claim by rescuing a point for the Three Lions with a stoppage-time equaliser at Hampden Park on Saturday.

"We had a couple of the marines come to the game and watch us, so it was great to see them again". We've had lots of discussions as a team about what we can do better. "It's not three points but it could be a massive point in the end", he said. "If you look at the fixtures we've got, we're capable of winning them all if we can perform like that".

Those failings are fresh in the mind of the man now charge, with former England defender Southgate outlining his desire to become the world's best upon his permanent appointment as manager.

The Spurs striker, top scorer in the Premier League last season with 29 goals, is not so prolific for the Three Lions with only five goals in 17 appearances and is keen for that statistic to improve. I did not want to lose my first game as captain, that is for sure - especially against Scotland.

Scotland had started the game aggressively, roared on by a capacity 52,000 crowd but England gradually took control and ended the first half looking increasingly unsafe.

"I felt we controlled the game for large parts and opened the scoring".

Southgate was particularly pleased that his players had shown exactly the kind of approach he had demanded from them during their team talks in the week's build-up.

"I practice the free-kicks every day in training".

"We are in a great position to qualify and with four games to go we feel should win all of them".
