Del Petro hails `smart` Murray, says he is `real No. 1`

The crowd erupted in one collective voice chanting "Delpo!"

The world No. 1 faced the sound and fury and responded with his most dynamic tennis of this clay-court season.

Asked if he rated it his best performance of the season, Murray said: "I played some good matches at the beginning of the year. Whoever won that first set had big momentum". It was very slow and heavy conditions and to be coming back was hard.

Cornet reached the last 16 for just the second time with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Polish 9th seed Agnieszka Radwanska who lost all her 7 service games.

He will play American John Isner or Russia's Karen Khachanov in the fourth round. It was a rematch of the 2016 Rio Olympics gold-medal final won by Murray. The players split the first two sets. Both those two sets could have gone either way.

I don't feel against Del Potro that was the case at all, and I also feel for large parts of the previous match against Martin Klizan that was a real positive for me as well.

The 2009 US Open champion thumped an ace down the middle to force tie break.

Del Potro's level improved as the set wore on and he broke back for 5-5, only for Murray to reply instantly and then serve out for a two-set lead.

He maintained the advantage throughout a high-quality set, only to be broken at 5-4 after failing to convert a set point.

"There were things I did today that, if I can do them consistently well over the next week or so, then I could do really well". The third arrive at 7-6 in the tiebreaker - the excruciating double-fault. With some exquisite returning and acutely angled groundstrokes, Murray raced through the final set and into the fourth round. The top seed did not lose a single game in the set and dropped a mere 11 points in total. This time, he converted.

Losing that opener on a disputed line call cut del Potro deep. He did so without hesitation and a deeply disconsolate del Potro leaned on the net for several moments staring at the mark and reflecting on a riveting 85-minute set that slipped away. "He had chances in the first set, he double faulted on set point", said Murray of his rival.

"It was a very good first set and I was a bit hesitant, but after that I relaxed", Wawrinka said.

"It's a very big shot", highlighted Murray.

The Wimbledon victor slashed an ace down the middle for a two-set lead.

The Argentine won his first-round match against fellow Argentinian, Guido Pella, in straight sets and his second-round match against Spain's Nicolas Almagro after the Spaniard retired in the third set from a knee injury.

Spanish No. 21 seeded Carla Suarez defeated Ukrainian 14th seed Elena Vesnina 6-4, 6-4 in an hour and 43 minutes.

Richard Gasquet was playing French compatriot Gael Monfils on Court Philippe Chatrier and Kei Nishikori was taking on Hyeon Chung on Court 1.

His last major came at Roland Garros in 2014.

The South African came from behind to win 6-7, 7-6, 5-7, 6-1, 6-4 in an epic match lasting four hours.

Isner was the last US man in the draw of 11 who entered the tournament.

Also winning through was Spanish veteran Fernando Verdasco.

The eighth-seeded Nishikori is in the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam tournament for the seventh time.
