Diplomat in China quits over Trump climate policy

Speaking during a clean energy conference in Beijing, he said China, European countries and USA state governors will for now fill the gap left by the federal government's move to abdicate leadership on the issue.

A State Department official told CNN that Rank's resignation was a "personal decision", but several USA media quoted sources late Monday that pointed to the U.S. exit from the Paris Climate Agreement as the real cause.

Chinese President Xi Jinping on Tuesday called on California to play a bigger role in promoting exchanges and cooperation between China and the United States.

However, there are other investing ramifications from Trump's decision to pull out of the Paris climate accord, Reuters warns.

"The Paris Agreement is stronger than Donald Trump despite his announcement of U.S. withdrawing from the agreement".

But his decision to do so last week was met with much criticism worldwide.

According to a U.S. State Department official, Rank was unwilling to apprise the Chinese of the U.S.'s withdrawal from the climate pact.

In Malaysia the MCCG is heartened by Natural Resources and Environment Minister Dato Sri' Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar's statement that Malaysia, as part of the 147 countries which ratified the Paris Agreement, will continue working towards achieving its goals.

The formal process to withdraw from the Paris agreement takes four years, but Trump said the USA will not honour the pledge submitted by the Obama administration.

US Energy Secretary Rick Perry is also due to attend this week's energy meeting in Beijing.

An anonymous senior USA official confirmed this account to Reuters.

"It will be up to the American people to step forward and in Virginia, we are doing just that", said Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe.

Mr Trump is a strong advocate of boosting U.S. fossil fuel industries, in particular coal mining, which suffered a steep decline in production during the tenure of former President Barack Obama.

In an earlier speech, Brown criticized those still "resisting reality".

Trump said he would "terminate" USA obligations to the Green Climate Fund, a main arm of UN climate funds, saying Washington had already paid one billion dollars and that "many other nations haven't spent anything, and many of them will never pay one dime".
