Donald Trump's Middle East Comment in Israel

President Trump made a brief trip to the West Bank on Tuesday for talks in the town of Bethlehem with the Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, after his visit with Israel on Monday.

Oded Revivi, chief foreign envoy of the Yesha settlers' council, noted that Trump made no mention of Palestinian independence during his statement with Abbas, and only spoke of "peace", the Associated Press reported.

Still, White House officials had downplayed the prospects for a breakthrough on this trip, saying it was important to manage their ambitions as they wade into terrain that has tripped up more experienced diplomats.

President Donald Trump wrapped up a two-day visit to Israel and the West Bank on Tuesday without evidence of progress toward renewing talks between Israel and the Palestinians. Due to its location beyond the 1967 borders, presidents have avoided visiting the site for fear it would send a message to Palestinians that the United States recognized that the wall was part of Israeli sovereign territory.

Mr. Trump said he was "gratified" that Mr. Abbas attended a summit with him last weekend in Saudi Arabia aimed at building cooperation among Arab states to fight extremism. "We can not stand a moment longer for the slaughter of innocent people", Trump said.

"I'm personally committed to helping Israelis and Palestinians achieve a peace agreement", Trump said. Trump's visit to Israel and the Palestinian territories is part of his first trip overseas as president, and follows an initial leg in Saudi Arabia, where he urged Islamic leaders to confront extremism.

"And I also heard from several sources that he's gotten some bad advice from the prime minister of Israel", says Rubin, "who wants that Saudi relationship so badly that he has even said that it might not be a good idea for the president to move the embassy right now".

"Our Palestinian people's attainment of their freedom and independence is key to peace and stability in the world", said the 82-year-old Mr. Abbas, whose popularity among Palestinians has been declining.

Trump's attitude toward Israel is a sharp departure from his predecessor Barack Obama, who had sometimes tense relations with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Trump initially sparked deep concern among Palestinians when he backed away from the long U.S. commitment to a two-state solution to the conflict.

Dr Husam Zomlot, a former adviser to Mr Abbas and now the Palestinian ambassador in Washington, said the contours of any deal between the Israelis and the Palestinians were well known to both sides.

Trump was unclear what measures this confrontation would entail.

During his talk at the Israel Museum, Trump placed the blame for the lack of a reached settlement between Israelis and Palestinians at the door of the Palestinians.

Trump has repeatedly underscored US support for Israel during his first global trip as president.
