Trump Expected to Renew Waiver to Keep Embassy in Tel Aviv

Trump said during his campaign that he would recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital, as its government has called for, but unnamed senior officials in his administration claim that although he still favors the move, he will refrain to avoid offending Palestinians.

Trump promised throughout the 2016 campaign that he would move the U.S. embassy from to Jerusalem, an action the Israeli government has long advocated.

Among those who have pulled out in support of the cultural boycott of Israel, Haaretz reported, are South African director John Trengrove, whose film "The Wound" is the opening-night production; Canadian-Pakistani screenwriter and actor Fawzia Mirza ("Signature Move"); Nadia Ibrahim, a Palestinian living in Denmark who was to serve as a member of the festival jury and appear on a panel, and Swiss actor Jasna Fritzi Bauer.

Israel occupied the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, in 1967.

Just prior to Trump's May 22-23 visit, the White House called Israeli sovereignty over the Western Wall a "policy matter" after after a USA official assisting in preparations for the tour of the site ignited a firestorm by angrily snapping that the holiest site in Judaism is "not [Israeli] territory".

And Abbas has long said moving the embassy to Jerusalem could shatter chances for peace talks.

The president, who during his 2016 presidential campaign advocated for the move, would have to cite national security interests as his reasoning for signing the waiver supported by every president since Congress passed the Jerusalem Embassy Act in 1995.

On Monday, it was reported that Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had told his party members that although the Trump administration is generally more supportive of the Israeli stances on the Palestinian issue, Israel has not been given a "blank check" to do as it pleases.

Bolton's bold prediction came just a few weeks after Trump met Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas earlier this month and promised to broker a "peace" deal.

According to the sources, Bannon sees the move not only as a promise to Israel, but also to the right-wing nationalist base that elected Trump.
