Fans reflect on life, legacy of rock legend Gregg Allman

He's remembered by the music world as a founding member of the Allman Brothers Band and one of the pioneers of Southern rock.

The legendary founder of The Allman Brothers Band died at age 69 on Saturday at his home in Savannah, Georgia.

Butch Trucks died in January 2017.

A Georgia family is remembering the late Gregg Allman, who gave family members the surprise of a lifetime when he crashed an engagement party over Labor Day weekend previous year. So they put out a live album, "At Fillmore East", recorded over two nights at a NY club.

He wrote several of them - It's Not My Cross to Bear, Midnight Rider, Ain't Wastin' Time No More and Melissa - while others were renditions of old blues songs, including One Way Out and Statesboro Blues.

The next few years saw the Allman Brothers become arguably the most popular American band in the country.

In a 2012 interview with The Associated Press, Gregg Allman said Duane remained on his mind every day.

Y'all don't have to guess which category Gregg Allman fell into.

When the boys were adolescents their mother moved with the kids to Daytona Beach, Florida, where Gregg bought his first guitar at a Sears store with money he earned from his paper route. Allman was arrested on federal drug charges in 1976 and made himself unpopular by agreeing to testify against the band's friend and tour manager, John "Scooter" Herring.

Another of Gregg's sons, Devon, is also a musician.

Our Mary Grace Shaw sat down with members of the band Stillwater who say the Allman Brothers opened up the door for them.

The Allman Brothers Band influenced the music industry across the country, but plenty of local fans credit the group with putting Macon on the map.

They were a scruffy-looking, denim-clad assemblage and Gregg stood out with his long golden-blond hair.

Of course anyone who has heard an Allman Brothers live recording will be aware of the band's ability to cut loose and jam, something Allman said were the real money moments.

The rest of the band was stricken but carried on and put out another well-regarded album, Eat a Peach.

Three months after its 1971 release, and just as the band was becoming nationally known, Duane Allman was killed in a motorcycle accident in Macon.

They were buried next to each other in Rose Hill.

There are rock stars - and then there are bad-ass, muthafuggin', hardtack rock legends.

"They're great because that's when you're learning and you're also putting it out and its coming together and all that good spontaneity is kick-ass man".

By the mid-'70s the cloud over the band grew darker as Gregg became a heroin addict and Betts assumed leadership.

Allman was the archtypical, hard-living southern rocker - married seven times, father of five, in and out of rehab countless times, a liver transplant in 2010. Soon the brothers were playing in local bands before forming their own outfit, the Allman Joys.

We've lost a heck of a lot of musical heroes in recent times and today comes news that we've lost another in Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, and one of my favourites, Gregg Allman.
