Musical legend Gregg Allman dies at 69

One of the founding members of The Allman Brothers Band and a pioneer in southern rock, Allman died Saturday at his home in Savannah, Georgia, his official website said.

Allman "passed away peacefully at his home in Savannah, Georgia", the statement said, having "struggled with many health issues over the past several years".

In 2016 he cancelled some tour dates for health reasons, and in March 2017 he canceled performances for the rest of this year.

"Duane and I caught it like an illness", Gregg told Southern Living magazine.

Allman's percussive Hammond B-3 organ playing helped anchor the Allman Brothers' rhythm section and provided a chuffing counterpoint to the often heated musical interplay between his brother and the band's other lead guitarist, Dickey Betts.

Gregg Allman was 69-years old.

Their songs such as "Whipping Post", "Ramblin' Man" and "Midnight Rider" laid the foundation for the genre and opened the doors for groups like Lynyrd Skynyrd and the Marshall Tucker Band.

A little more than a year later, bassist Berry Oakley was also killed in a motorcycle accident. As a member of The Allman Brothers Band, he spent roughly four decades entertaining the world with his brand of music.

Cher, to whom Allman was briefly married in the 1970s, reacted on Twitter Saturday afternoon. Allman was a regular on the Billboard Hot 100 from 1971 to 1981, and reached No. 1 on the Mainstream Rock Songs chart again in 1990 with "Good Clean Fun", Billboard reported. Considered one of the greatest live albums ever made, the two LP record opened with their version of Blind Willie McTell's "Statesboro Blues", with Duane Allman on slide guitar.

He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995, but said in his 2012 memoir My Cross to Bear he was too drunk to enjoy the ceremony.

"Low Country Blues", Allman's sixth studio recording as a solo artist, was nominated for a Grammy Award for best blues album in 2011.

According to his website, Allman is survived by "his wife, Shannon Allman; his children, Devon, Elijah Blue, Delilah Island Kurtom and Layla Brooklyn Allman; three grandchildren; his niece, Galadrielle Allman; lifelong friend Chank Middleton, and a large extended family".
