Going home: Schapelle frenzy grows

In a statement from Schapelle which was read by a member of her security team soon after she landed, she thanked her supporters in Australia and Bali and asked for privacy.

She arrives home to heavy media scrutiny, which has followed her ever since her arrest at Denpasar International Airport in 2004.

'Almost at the airport. with my @mercedescorby, ' she wrote. Her sister Mercedes, who lives in Indonesia, shielded her from journalists' cameras as they walked to a auto.

Ms Corby's short journey to the parole office was accompanied by an armoured auto convoy, guarded by 275 Kuta and Denpasar police officers and tailed by a clamouring press army.

At the Bali parole office Bali justice chief Kompyang Adnyana proclaimed: "She is now free".

"To each and every one of you, you are appreciated".

But at the bitter end she boarded a marginally earlier Malindo flight to Brisbane, leaving a plane full of miffed photographers on the Virgin flight.

TV stations and magazines are fighting for the first interview and going to extreme measures in their efforts to get close to her.

Corby spent 12.5 years in jail and on parole after she was convicted on a drug smuggling charge in 2005.

On the flight itself, Ms Szach and Ms Webb said they briefly saw Ms Corby with her sister Mercedes and a bodyguard referred to as "John".

She will receive a police escort to Bali's parole office and then to the worldwide airport where she will be held by immigration.

"I hope that we as Indonesians can always uphold human rights for anyone coming to Indonesia", he said. Or are they just giving the people what they want?

He said the parole office did not need to provide an escort but had received a request for assistance, including from the Australian Consulate to "save my citizen".

Indonesia's drug laws are much stricter than Australia's with no distinction being drawn between marijuana and other drugs including heroin and cocaine.

Drones buzzed overhead as the Polisi vehicles drove past, blue lights flashing, in the narrow Denpasar street.

ABC News reported that Schapelle Corby's home will receive extra police protection ahead of her long-awaited return home.

It's not clear if Corby has a personal connection to the Tyrrell family or to the case.

Doctor Anak Agung Gede Hartawan was there to conduct a last check of the Australian's health. There will be Denpasar police who will be responsible for the security of the process.

A "drill", the media told, for what was to come that afternoon.

"When she gets here and settles in, we'll just have to make sure we get her out and about". But the celebrations turned to hell when she was arrested at Bali's global airport with 4.2 kilograms of marijuana.

"Not only was it a major political issue between our two countries, it defined the bilateral relationship for a number of years", said Australian-based Indonesia Institute president Ross Taylor.

But sister Mercedes has arrived at their mother's Loganlea house.

To document her travels, the former beauty therapist opened an Instagram account on Friday that attracted more than 3000 followers nearly immediately.

Mr Panangian, whom she met in Kerobokan jail, has drug convictions and is unlikely to pass the character test required to get a visa to Australia. They have remained close: "She is really witty and very amusing".

He said whether this ban would be extended would be a decision to be taken later.
