Several injured after clashes between protesters and police in Brazil

Brazil's President Michel Temer called troops back off the streets of the capital Thursday after deploying them to guard government buildings following riots by protesters demanding he quit.

Fiery mass protest turns violent in Brasilia as President Michel Temer orders deployment of soldiers to restore order.

The withdrawal of the military came after widespread criticism saying that the move was excessive, amounting to little more than an effort by President Michel Temer to hold onto power amid increasing calls for his resignation.

Temer ordered 1,500 troops to restore order and soldiers took up positions guarding federal buildings. "They lit a fire in a room, broke photos in a gallery of ex-ministers and confronted police", a spokesman for the ministry told AFP. If the court rules that it did, Temer may be stripped of the presidency.

The measure had intensified pressure on Temer, who is now facing requests for "impeachment" or resignation both on the streets as well as in political and economic sectors that used to be allied with him, due to a recent corruption scandal being investigated against him.

Defense Minister Raul Jungmann announced Thursday that Temer had revoked the decision to deploy the army, 17 hours after it was decreed.

Temer is struggling to retain power after the release of a recording that appears to capture him approving hush money for a convicted former lawmaker.

Presidential hopeful and Sao Paulo state Gov. Geraldo Alckmin said on Friday that former President Fernando Henrique Cardoso and Sen.

The appeals for President Temer to resign have increased from last week, when it was allegedly revealed he had agreed to a "bribe payment". The PSDB's own leading member and presidential candidate, who placed a close second to Rousseff in the 2014 presidential election, has been stripped of his Senate seat and ordered to surrender his passport as prosecutors prepare to order his jailing over related corruption charges. Associated Press writer Mauricio Savarese contributed from Rio de Janeiro.

If that happens, Congress would have 30 days to pick a successor to lead Brazil until elections late next year.

The move to use the military in the face of protests could heighten anger at the government and senior officials were already distancing themselves from the decision. Those are unpopular among most Brazilians, though most economists say they're needed to revive the economy.

"If this government can not hold itself up, the armed forces will not hold up this government", said Sen.

While Congress debated, 35,000 people were marching toward the chamber down a long avenue lined with the main government buildings, including the Supreme Court, the presidential palace and the ministries. "President Temer brought in the armed forces because a bunch of criminals were setting ministries on fire", he said.

The PSDB leader, who asked for anonymity because his party has not yet chose to break with Temer, said Cardoso, who led Brazil from 1995 to 2003, could be a "sensational" option.

While Temer has repeatedly declared that he will not resign and will have to be thrown out of office, his closest political allies in Congress are reportedly deserting him and calling for him to step down.
