Setting aside past rude talk, Trump and pope focus on peace

Accompanying him was wife Melania Trump, who is a Catholic and who brought along a rosary to have it blessed.

Leave aside the "controversy", the answer to this is quite simple: Following the tradition of other diplomats, Melania chose to forgo a head covering when she visited the capital of Saudi Arabia - a luxury yet to be extended to other foreign women, or the kingdom's female residents.

President Donald Trump is poised to call on Pope Francis, the famously humble pontiff with whom he has publicly clashed. Pope Francis went so far as saying, "A person who thinks only about building walls, wherever they might be, and not building bridges, is not Christian".

After he was finished with Melania, Pope Francis moved onto Trump, giving him a copy of his book, Laudato si', an encyclical work on the environment and climate change-something Trump has previously said was invented by the Chinese as a hoax. "ISIS would have been eradicated unlike what is happening now with our all talk, no action politicians".

Mr Trump and the Pope were famously at loggerheads previous year, when the former said building a wall - the one proposed between the United States and Mexico - would show Mr Trump was "not a Christian".

Trump visited the Bambino Gesu children's hospital in Rome following an audience with Pope Francis. A quick spin through historical photos on first family blog East Wing Rules shows Laura Bush, Hillary Clinton, Jackie Kennedy and Nancy Reagan with headscarves during their respective meetings, as well.

And as the two said goodbye, Trump reportedly said, "I won't forget what you said".

She adds that the tone in Brussels has gone from off-the-record sneering when the erratic and unpredictable Mr Trump first won the November elections, to outright concern now that the implications of his presidency have begun to sink in.

No one could predict what would happen during Trump's visit to Israel. Trump likely wore one out of respect. As a sign of modesty, many Orthodox Jewish women choose to cover their hair.

In this photo provided by the Vatican newspaper L'Osservatore Romano, Pope Benedict XVI exchanges gifts with first lady Laura Bush at the Vatican, Thursday, Feb. 9, 2006. The Pope had the subject on the agenda, and Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Secretary of State at the Vatican, exhorted Trump to not yank America out of the 2015 Paris climate agreement. Only royals are allowed the "privilege du blanc" - the so-called white privilege that dictates white outfits and white head coverings for queens and other royals when meeting the pontiff. Also in 1989, during a landmark meeting between Mikhail Gorbachev and Pope John Paul II the Soviet leader's wife, Raisa Gorbachev, wore a bright red dress. Melania, Ivanka and her husband Jared Kushner were in attendance, too. First Lady Laura Bush followed a similar custom during a 2006 papal audience. He gave the Pope a boxed set of five first-edition books by murdered USA civil rights leader Martin Luther King and a bronze sculpture.
