NFL Reportedly Won't Allow Dunking over Goalposts in Relaxed Celebration Rules

In addition to relaxing celebration rules, the National Football League also finalized three other rule changes on Tuesday. The eliminated cut to 75 means teams will carry 90 players throughout pre-season and cut to the league mandated 53 in one cut day.

The roster cut-down period rule change allows teams to have a longer evaluation period of players, and allows those players more of an opportunity to earn one of the final 53-man roster spots.

Cutting off five minutes from the overtime period is supposed help address safety concerns with the physical toll of teams on a short week who play extended time on Sunday and then turn around to play again on Thursday.

The changes were approved amid the NFL's renewed emphasis on making their on-field product fan-friendly. Instead of it being 15 minutes in length, overtime will now be 10 minutes, which likely increases the chances for a tie. They can return to games eight weeks after being put on injured reserve. The fact the league is keeping overtime periods in the postseason at 15 minutes doesn't really matter, considering the postseason calls for games to reach a 2nd overtime and beyond until one team wins and one team loses.

After years of limiting how -and how much - players could celebrate following touchdowns, the league chose to loosen up its rules, allowing players to again use the football as a prop, celebrate as a group and roll around or flap their arms like snow angels on the ground again if they choose. Rather, he stated more broadly that "offensive demonstrations, celebrations that are prolonged and delay the game, and those directed at an opponent, will still be penalized".

The NFL will allow group celebrations, using the football as a prop following a touchdown, and celebrating on the ground, such as snow angels.

There are mixed feelings toward this new rule change.

Washington's cornerback Josh Norman was fined after he celebrated his interception with a "bow and arrow", gesture during a 2016 game against the Cleveland Browns.

It's one of a few rule changes the league reportedly voted into action at the owners meetings Tuesday in Chicago. Days after the Los Angeles franchises noted their stadium opening would be delayed another year, the league moved Super Bowl LV from Los Angeles to Tampa Bay.

Plenty of Chiefs players will be happy with this news, especially tight end Travis Kelce who has a history of awesome dance moves in the end zone.

The rule on using the ball as a prop "was responsible for so numerous most mystifying penalties" last season, including one for tossing it over the posts, continues Seifert: "Now we can go back to pretending the football is a baby and rocking it".
