Left workers, police clash during rally in Kolkata; several injured

Around 2,000 additional policemen and troops from the Rapid Action Force were deployed in the city ahead of the rally.

The protesters violently clashed with Kolkata police personnel in at least five different parts of the city.

Barricades came down at Mayo Road and Shibpur and other points, as some of the protestors were seen battling police and countering batons with stones and bricks.

The police used water cannons to disperse the violent rallyists at Santragachhi.

One group of 22 lawmakers led by legislator Sujan Chakraborty, though, managed to sneak through and reached the secretariat's north gate where they were stopped.

".They have been arrested and are being taken to Alipore court". The police personnel stopped and detained them.

Meanwhile, protesting the attack on journalists and camerapersons as also "innocent pedestrians" and participants in the "peaceful" March to Nabanna (state Secretariat), the Left Front Kolkata district unit called for a march on Tuesday from the Lenin Statue in the Maidan area to the Entally Market in central Kolkata. But what the leadership did not mention was that supporters would also be marching from Howrah station, Sealdah station, Behala, Garia, Basanti, Barasat and Barrackpore choking all major roads, including EM Bypass, Park Circus connector, D H Road, C R Avenue, B T Road, VIP Road, S N Banerjee Road, J L Nehru Road, Hospital Road and Lenin Sarani.

The Left Front had made a decision to opt for a "Nabanna march" to protest on various issues including corruption in governance by the Trinamool Congress. Police, however, said they were ready to tackle the challenge.

CPI-M state secretary and politburo member Surjya Kanta Mishra and Left Front chairman Biman Bose staged a sit-in at Mayo Road in protest against the police action. Some medical camps opened by the Left were allegedly vandalised by the police.

Chief minister Mamata Banerjee and the top brass of the administration were travelling when violence broke out.

Left protesters at the 'Nabanno Abhijan'Twitter/Syeda Shabana‏. BJP leader Rahul Sinha demanded a judicial probe into the cops' assault on mediapersons. But Trinamul secretary general Partha Chatterjee said, "The CPI (M) signboard is now in crisis".
