Wyoming Law Enforcement Memorial Ceremony Canceled, 5K Still a Go

He was the first DART officer killed in the line of duty in the department's history and died just two weeks before his 44th birthday.

Officers from across the county, as well as cadets from the Penn State law enforcement program, filled the front courtyard as local police officers and government officials spoke of the lives lead by these civil servants.

At the service, Chris Nicola, a former Special Warfare Operator Chief for the U.S. Navy and retired professional law enforcement officer, will be the keynote speaker. Some of the surviving family members accompanied the officers. "The sacrifice, the honor, the courage (police officers) put on a daily basis; it's unfortunate that on a yearly basis officers are killed in the line of duty, and this day and basically this week is their time to be remembered".

The memorial, coinciding with National Police Week, took on even more significance following the Tuesday shooting death of Broadwater County sheriff's deputy Mason Moore.

The UK Police Memorial will see a physical memorial established, set in a lovely landscaped garden, inscribed with the names of over 1,400 police officers and staff who have died from injuries they sustained while carrying out their lawful duties. President Trump's plan to improve the lives of law enforcement officers and their families is admirable.

Lt. Gov. Brad Little also spoke during the service, saying it's honor to serve a state filled with fearless men and women.

The event was a part of National Police Week, an annual week of recognition of law enforcement established by President John F. Kennedy in 1962.

Sixty officers competed in the fitness challenge, spending a minute at one of four stations, including a row machine, box steps, an assault bike and burpees.

"Please know that you do not grieve alone", he told the families of the fallen officers.

This week, the House passed the Thin Blue Line Act.

"I am pleased that issues that are important in helping protect law enforcement officers and their families are getting the attention in Washington that they so justly deserve", Portsmouth Police Chief Robert Ware said.
