Tom Hardy to play Venom in Spider-Man spinoff

Hardy is no stranger to comic book movies, having played Bane in Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Rises.

The character also appeared in 2007's Spider-Man played by Topher Grace.

Hardy is said to be a big fan of Venom, which is likely why he was so quick to sign on for the role; Sony even posted a photo of him in a Venom t-shirt to announce the news on Twitter.

Sony Pictures has started announcing the cast of Sony's Marvel Universe film "Venom", which is set to release in 2018.

Venom is scheduled to be released on October 5, 2018. The Venom movie will take on numerous characteristics of how the spin-off was originally conceived at Sony back when it would have dovetailed into Andrew Garfield's The Amazing Spider-Man films.

Variety also reports that the film will be directed by Ruben Fleischer, who helmed the 2009 comedy-horror Zombieland. Disgraced and suicidal after his false public accusation, Brock meets the alien symbiote, together becoming Venom and seeking out revenge against Spider-Man. After its first reboot of the series foundered, Sony Pictures cut a deal in 2015 to merge Spider-Man with Marvel Studios' massively popular cinematic universe that features the Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy.

Marvel and Sony made a deal in 2015 over the usage rights of Spider-Man. Scott Rosenberg and Jeff Pinkner will write the script and production begins in the fall. Still, the decision not to have Spider-Man involved is one that we can't quite get over.

Indeed, The Hollywood Reporter first broke on Friday that Hardy is entering final negotiations to star as Venom, and presumably his Eddie Brock alter-ego too.

So how do you make a movie about one of Spider-Man's greatest villains - a character whose very existence is predicated on an interaction with the hero - without actually using Spider-Man?

The casting comes at a critical time for the studio's franchise based on the Marvel Comics' flagship wall-crawler.
