Shadow Brokers Threaten To Unleash More Hacking Tools

It is believed that hacking tools that belong to the NSA were leaked online and were used to build into WannaCry ransomware, also known as WannaCrypt, which has ensnared up to 300,000 computers in more than 150 countries.

The hacking group that says it facilitated the WannaCry ransomware attack has threatened to leak a new wave of hacking tools it claims to have stolen from the National Security Agency.

Shadow Brokers came to public attention in August 2016 when it mounted an unsuccessful attempt to auction off a set of older cyber-spying tools it said were stolen from the NSA.

While the hackers behind the actual WannaCry attacks have not been identified, we do know that the malware itself was obtained from the Shadow Brokers, who stole it from the NSA.

In the post, which will worry security agencies and companies around the world, the Shadow Brokers said: "In June, TheShadowBrokers is announcing "TheShadowBrokers Data Dump of the Month" service".

The group claims it will release new exploits through this new monthly membership program.

What is "WannaCry" and how does the ransomware work? Is being like wine of month club. The gang says that potential buyers would have to pay the subscription fee the data is locked behind but, other than that, practically everyone could buy it and used it for whatever purposes, terrorist organizations included.

In a lengthy diatribe written in broken English on Tuesday morning, the Shadow Brokers attacked the "Equation Group", a hacking team associated with the NSA.

Revealing data from SWIFT and nuclear programs in Russia, China, Iran or North Korea could disrupt ongoing NSA operations, according to Nicholas Weaver, a staff cybersecurity researcher writing on LawFare.

The Shadow Brokers stated that future leaks could include exploits and hacking tools for web browsers, routers and handsets. The group said that the data would be locked behind a subscription fee, but, beyond that, they do not care who buys the data or for what objective it is used. At the end of the letter, the hacker group hinted the NSA could make all these problems go away if the agency paid up for the tools.

Its warning allowed Microsoft to fix the issue with a patch that was issued in March, weeks before The Shadow Brokers leaked EternalBlue online.

Microsoft did provide a patch for the vulnerability but a lot of machines were still exposed as they had not installed the updates.

"Repeatedly, exploits in the hands of governments have leaked into the public domain and caused widespread damage." - said Microsoft's Brad Smith - "An equivalent scenario with conventional weapons would be the US military having some of its Tomahawk missiles stolen".
