Planned Parenthood files suit against new abortion legislation

In a teleconference, Planned Parenthood of the Heartland President and CEO Suzanna de Baca said they looked at a number of factors in choosing the clinics to close, including need, community support, patient trends and finances. Whatever federal money was going to Planned Parenthood's health centers through Medicaid reimbursements or Title X grants would go to other health clinics, so all patients would have to do is change their providers.

A spokesman couldn't be immediately reached for comment.

Four Planned Parenthood clinics in Iowa will close this summer after Republican Gov. Terry Branstad signed a law essentially defunding abortion providers.

Those four health centers are in Burlington, Keokuk, the Quad Cities and Sioux City.

This story will be updated. The funds can not be used to pay for abortions. Chris Hall and Rep. Tim Kacena called the closing of the Sioux City clinic "troubling", saying it means almost 5,000 women in the area will "lose access to critical health care services like cancer screenings and birth control".

A few weeks ago, Prichard said that, if elected, he would seek to reverse the legislature's decision to significantly reduce collective bargaining rights for public workers, but, in this case, he said he believes it would take an act of the legislature to reverse the decision on how to fund family planning programs in the state.

Planned Parenthood claims that part of the new law preventing someone from assisting a minor to obtain an abortion without parental consent will prevent their organization "from advising its minor patients and persons seeking abortion services that they can travel to other states to obtain their abortions".

"I am concerned about the health and well-being of the people in Iowa who now can no longer turn to their trusted health care provider", Dr. Raegan McDonald-Mosley, Planned Parenthood's chief medical officer, told HuffPost. Two suits filed a year ago challenged a ban on abortions because of fetal genetic abnormalities and a mandate that forces women to undergo an ultrasound at least 18 hours before having an abortion.

The Casper location does not perform abortions, referring for them instead.

Research by the Guttmacher Institute shows that Texas's family planning program in 2013 served less than one-quarter of the women it helped in 2011.

Yvonne Gutierrez, executive director of Planned Parenthood Texas Votes, said the request for the lost funds "really opens up a huge can of worms that could be very destructive".

Planned Parenthood (PP) is announcing its only facility in Wyoming is being closed to cut costs, with other locations scheduled to be closed later in the year.

The Republican governor tapped McClelland to lead the effort shortly after taking office in January.
