Nicky Hayden in 'serious condition' in hospital after being hit by auto

From the past season, he returned to the Superbike Championship with the Red Bull World Superbike Honda, replacing Sylvain Guintoli alongside Michel van der Mark.

He was rushed to hospital with severe chest and head injuries, according to the reports.

"Ambulances arrived and Hayden was taken directly to the hospital", it added.

"There are no substantial changes from what was communicated yesterday evening", the statement said.

"Nicky Hayden remains hospitalised in the intensive care unit, and the clinical picture remains extremely serious". Honda WSBK team Tweeted only to confirm that Nicky was in an accident and is receiving treatment.

Hayden stayed in Italy after he competed in the fifth series of the World Superbike championship that was held in Imola on May 13-14.

Messages of support for Hayden have poured in from the racing fraternity overnight.

"More updates will come as soon as they are announced".

The 2006 MotoGP champion returned for a second spell in the Superbike World Championship previous year and was in Italy after competing in the Motul Italian Round last weekend.

Hayden was riding with a group when he was struck by a vehicle.
