NBC changes its mind about cancelling 'Timeless' after fan uproar

"Timeless" was a quintessential bubble show this season, averaging a 1.1 rating in adults 18-49 on the night it aired but scoring pretty strong delayed-viewing numbers (it rose to 2.1 after a week of DVR catchup). It could be the spring, or it could be the summer - it's a little early to tell and it could depend heavily on what happens with some of the other programming at the network. With the two sides apart on the financials, the network moved in to cancel Timeless, while renewing Blindspot and Taken, both lower rated than Timeless.

NBC's Timeless, a freshmen time-travel TV series, was initially canceled in the middle of this week. Created by Eric Kripke and Shawn Ryan, Timeless had found a dedicated audience and pulled in impressive critical response, but was untimely axed after its short, 15-episode first season. "We heard from fans and the outcry and we woke up the next morning and thought, 'Let's figure out how to bring it back, '" NBC Chairman Robert Greenblatt said during a phone conference with reporters on Sunday.

Unlike much of NBC's drama slate, Timeless hails from outside studio Sony Pictures Television (also home to The Blacklist). Television offered an ownership stake in the series and greater financial incentives.

Timeless is the only time-travel show to survive the past week, as Time After Time, Frequency, and Making History were all done away with. That makes things incredibly hard for indie studios like Sony and Warner Bros. Executive producer Eric Kripke tweeted on Saturday: "The #TimeTeam went back 3 days, and changed history".

Star Matt Lanter, who plays Wyatt Logan, popped up on Facebook with a video announcing the pickup as well.
