Elections BC gearing up for eventful final count

In 2013, when the riding was called Comox Valley and had slightly different boundaries, the absentee ballots were nearly as close, with just 25 votes separating the NDP and Liberal candidates.

The BC Liberals had about a one-in-10 chance of taking a majority government in his simulations; the NDP, only a 1.4-to-six-per-cent chance of taking more seats than the Liberals.

"If you cast your ballot say in Prince George but you reside in Victoria of your ballot will be sent after the initial countdown to your riding of residence to be counted there during the final count so that's where the time period between the initial count and final count comes into play".

The B.C. Liberal party won 43 seats, the NDP 41 and the Green party took three seats on Tuesday, but 176,000 absentee ballots are yet to be counted and there were several close races that could still change hands.

With the Liberals now set to take 43 of the 44 seats required for a majority government, a turnaround in Courtenay-Comox would have major consequences.

He lost the riding to NDP candidate Ronna-Rae Leonard by just nine votes. "All of those ballots, under those circumstances, get counted during the final count".

"What we have in B.C.is we", he told Global News. This is another race that could well be determined by absentee votes, of which there were nearly 2,000 in 2013.

Sam Sullivan hung onto this riding for the Liberals by a little more than 500 votes. In 2013, absentee votes were nearly exactly equal: 898 for the Liberals and 895 for the NDP. In 2013, Sullivan won by 3,200 votes and absentee ballots that year similarly favoured the Liberals.

Some expect it to go Liberal once absentee ballots are counted - Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Comox is located there, and former base commander Jim Benninger ran in the riding as a Liberal.

While we wait for the absentee ballots to decide who wins this election, there is this sure thing: The Greens have three seats. A previous version of the story had the Liberal lead at 170 votes.
