Syrian official threatens to respond to alleged Israeli strike

A huge explosion shook Damascus in what state media said was an Israeli missile strike on a military installation near the Syrian capital's worldwide airport.

Israel's intelligence minister hinted that Israeli warplanes struck a suspected Hizbullah weapons depot near Damascus International Airport on April 27.

Rami Abdurrahman, head of the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, said the blasts were heard across the capital, jolting residents awake.

Photos of a major blaze posted to social media sites appear to confirm the suspicion that either a fuel storage unit or explosive weapons dump were hit.

The Israeli Air Force also bombed a nuclear reactor in Syria in 2007, fearing it had a military objective. Iranian cargo planes had reportedly arrived at the airport shortly before the attack.

According to Assad, there is evidence published in the internet which shows Israel's role in supporting terrorist groups in Syria.

Israel has not confirmed or denied the reported Damascus attack.

An Israeli Patriot missile intercepted a Syrian unmanned aircraft that entered Israeli airspace over the Golan Heights on Thursday evening, the Israel Defense Forces said, following reports of an attack in Damascus attributed by Syria to Israel.

She said "Moscow condemns acts of aggression against Syria", and calls on everyone to "act within the framework of respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Syria".

As many as five strikes are thought to have hit the depot.

"We are acting to prevent the transfer of sophisticated weapons from Syria to Hezbollah in Lebanon by Iran", Katz said on Israeli army radio.

Hezbollah's Al-Manar television said the explosion was "probably" caused by an Israeli air strike.

It was not the first Israeli strike, as the Israelis have ramped up their airstrikes on military positions in Syria recently, targeting military base in Qunaitera province in southern Syria this week, as well as a military position near the ancient city of Palmyra last month.
