Levee breaks in Arkansas as record flooding continues to plague the region

Portions of the Missouri and MS rivers remain well above flood stage.

More than 100 members of the Arkansas National Guard are assisting with the flood-fighting effort in northeast Arkansas. ABC meteorologists anticipate more precipitation to pummel those water bodies Wednesday and Thursday, flooding some regions at record levels.

"Residents should evacuate immediately in east Pocahontas and points southeast in Randolph and Lawrence counties", the Weather Service wrote in a bulletin.

Heavy rain last weekend led to significant flooding in several Midwestern states.

"My admonition to the public, particularly in northeast Arkansas, is to listen to the local authorities, and if they order evacuation, that you do so quickly", Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson said Wednesday afternoon, per the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette.

Downpours that dumped up to a foot of rain in parts of the nation's midsection last weekend led to the sudden surge of water.

In Missouri, residents of West Alton, a small river town about 20 miles north of St. Louis, were urged to evacuate Wednesday after a small levee breached along the Missouri River.

At least 50 homes were destroyed or sustained major damage due to the flooding, the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reported. Businesses ... homes ... and any structures will flood. Flooding is blamed in at least nine deaths, and an 18-month-old Arkansas girl swept away by floodwater is missing and presumed dead. Officials said the levee was built only to withstand 28 feet of water.

The Meramec River in suburban St. Louis also is on the decline. "Move to higher ground now".
