Gov. Branstad signs new voter ID changes into law

Not far away at the Iowa Judicial Building, paperwork was being filed by attorneys for Planned Parenthood and the American Civil Liberties Union asking the state Supreme Court to reverse a decision a day earlier by Polk County Judge Jeffrey Farrell rejecting their request to halt implementation of the law until the matter can be decided at trial.

The changes will go into effect as soon as Branstad signs the bill, which is scheduled to happen Friday, May 5, 2017 at 8:30 a.m. Fifty-nine percent of women who seek abortions are mothers who have decided that they can not parent another child, and 66 percent plan to have children when they are older, Planned Parenthood says.

Only hours after Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad signed a bill requiring a 72-hour waiting period for abortions, the state's highest court ordered a temporary injunction Friday halting enforcement of the new law.

The ACLU of Iowa said this means women scheduled to have abortion procedures Friday will be able to receive care as scheduled.

"This order immediately and temporarily blocks the challenged provisions of the law: the 72 hour minimum waiting period and medically unnecessary additional appointment", she said.

According to the petition, the new law is one of the strictest requirements in the nation on women seeking an abortion.

The law, passed by Iowa's Republican-controlled House and Senate last month, bans abortions once a pregnancy reaches 20 weeks and stipulates a three-day waiting period before women can undergo any abortion.

Seventeen of these states ban abortion at about 20 weeks.

According to the lawsuit, Planned Parenthood of the Heartland provided over 2,100 medication abortions and over 1,200 surgical abortions in Iowa in the past year. The justices have given attorneys until noon on Monday to present legal briefs on the matter.

Republicans claim the bill will prevent voter fraud, but Democrats says the new law will make it harder to vote. The group appealed, and the Iowa Supreme Court's ruling followed.

But Iowa Solicitor General Jeffrey Thompson pointed to Planned Parenthood's business hours and scheduling as the problem, not the law itself, the AP reports.

In the two hours we saw patients between the governor signing this legislation into law and when the temporary injunction was ordered, havoc was wreaked on many patients' lives.
