ADP Reports 177000 Rise in Private Payrolls

The non-farm private sector added 177,000 jobs in April, according to the ADP National Employment Report.

"Job growth is off to a strong start in 2017", said Mark Zandi, the chief economist of Moody's Analytics. March's figure was revised down to 255,000. Last month, the government said employers added only 98,000 jobs in March, far below the robust hiring in ADP's report. The ADP report is based on private payroll data in addition to lagged behind government data. It often diverges from federal data.

"In April, we saw a moderate slowdown from the strong pace of hiring in the first quarter", Ahu Yildirmaz, vice president and co-head of the ADP Research Institute, said in a prepared statement. Manufacturing added 11,000 jobs while construction lost 2,000 jobs.

Zandi went on to suggest the weak GDP figure from last Friday - eliciting much of the same worry the weak BLS jobs number did - has measurement issues that bias its figures lower, not accounting for economic activity that doesn't immediately come out in jobs numbers. "Looking across company sizes, midsized businesses showed persistent growth for the past six months".

Analysts expect the Labor Department to report that the economy added a total of 185,000 net new private- and public-sector jobs last month.

"The softness in construction is continued payback from outsized growth during the mild winter", he said.

According to ADP, there was an increase in employment of 61,000 for small companies, 78,000 for mid-sized companies and 38,000 for large companies with all categories showing slower growth than in March.

Construction hiring accelerated in the first two months of the year, when temperatures were warmer than usual, and has leveled off since then. Brick-and-mortar retailers also cut jobs in response to stiff competition from online merchants like Amazon.

The unemployment rate is forecast to tick up to 4.6 percent from the 4.5 percent recorded a month earlier.
