Just 65 laps into Sunday's Toyota Owners 400 at Richmond International Raceway, Ricky Stenhouse Jr. scraped the Turn 3 wall while racing hard with Denny Hamlin. However, even though Hamlin was satisfied with the result, he doesn't think Toyota and Joe Gibbs Racing are back to their usual standard just yet.
"We were competitive and our auto drove really good", Hamlin said. "It's the best we could do".
"The caution came out", Logano said of the final yellow. You have to have a faster auto, and we just you know, I'm optimistic.
"I thought the rule was two on or under the box, but obviously the call was that we were illegal and had to get a penalty so I don't know what the deal is there", said a confused Martin Truex Jr., who was penalized on lap 368 and had to rally back to finish 10th.
With a two-tire stop, Hamlin led the field to green on Lap 211 followed by Harvick, Matt Kenseth, Keselowski, Larson, Clint Bowyer, McMurray, Ryan Newman and Logano.
Kevin Harvick has 8/1 odds to win today's race. "The demands are high, the opportunity to leave a race vehicle and do something else because of the financial situation they are fortunate enough to be in allows them to pick and choose their careers a little bit differently".
"Here, we were just fast enough to break through and kind of steal a win". Just one of those days where you battle all day and hope to get a top 10 and we barely did that. "At least if you know why, then you can go to work on those areas".
"Well, we got three-wide right on the start and then the 5 [Kasey Kahne] ran us up into the fence", said Erik Jones, who was out of the race after only five laps and finished last.
"He said he didn't see us", Earnhardt said of Johnson. "We're really right where we were". I mean, if we go to a mile and a half next week, we're just as far off as what we were a week ago.
"You've still got to have raw speed". We knew we had to do something different to beat those guys. "But, we were probably going to finish anywhere around 10th to 15th today, not all that awesome, but (sigh) we just had such bad luck". I hate to be pessimistic about today, but we've got to be real about it and realize, hey, it's just a short track. We still have a lot of work to do to catch up. He started the day in the rear of the field after his team had changed the transmission in his No. 22 Team Penske Ford on Saturday, and while he carried a history of success at this short-track into the weekend, there was little to suggest that he seriously would contend in his 300th career start. Coming off the announcement that he would retire at the end of 2017, Earnhardt fought all afternoon at Richmond just to remain inside the top 20 due to tightness in the No. 88 auto. Everything is pretty level.
"We struggled most of the day but actually got it better at the end when we drove up to eighth", Blaney said.
