United Airlines Provides 'Amicable Settlement' For Dao Incident

United Airlines and lawyers for the passenger seen on video being dragged from a United airliner in Chicago say the man has reached "an amicable settlement" with the airline.

A provision in the settlement requires the amount of the settlement to remain confidential.

The footage showed airport police officers pulling the 69-year-old Kentucky physician from his seat and dragging him down the aisle.

"This is a turning point for all of us at United and it signals a culture shift toward becoming a better, more customer-focused airline", chief executive Oscar Munoz said in a statement that accompanied the release of the report on the April 9 incident at Chicago's O'Hare International Airport.

United will "empower its personnel to make decisions and find solutions that make sense for both customers and employees", Munoz said in a letter to senators Wednesday that was sent in response to inquiries about the unusual removal. United says that only 4 percent of its flights have more ticketed customers ready to board than available seats.

Crew Members Will Be Booked 60 Minutes Before Departure Under New Policy: The policy comes after passenger Dr. David Dao was dragged off a flight and left bloodied when he did not give up his seat for a crew member.

It's also important to note that "compensation" does not mean actual money, but rather, "United dollars".

Demetrio said Dao suffered a concussion, broken nose and two missing teeth, among other injuries.

"I hope other airlines will follow United's lead", Demetrio told The New York Times.

Those who volunteer to surrender their seats when a flight is overbooked would get up to $10,000 in compensation. One passenger even shared a sentiment after Dao's incident, saying: "I wouldn't fly United if they gave me a free pass to fly first class to anywhere for the rest of my life".

Munoz said that United Airlines will double their efforts to gain back the trust of their clients by the way they treat them.

The US airline repented yet again for the April 9 incident and unveiled improvements to its procedures on April 27, including "limiting the use of law enforcement to safety and security issues only".

As for the officers of the Chicago Department of Aviation, Dr. Dao's attorney said that his client will not sue them nor anyone anymore.

Earlier on Thursday, the airline announced several steps to prevent such episodes from recurring and said that passengers who had arrived on an aircraft should not have to give up their seats.
