Ronaldo hat-trick fires Real into semis

His hat-trick sent them through to their seventh straight Champions League semi-final and Spanish daily sports newspaper Diario AS's front page summed up the mood declaring: "Cristiano demolishes Bayern".

"It was a very hard-fought game, but in the end, we got a good result, which I believe we deserved".

Bayern midfielder Arturo Vidal was sent off for two bookable offences, while Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo scored in extra time from an offside position as the Spanish holders won 6-3 on aggregate on Tuesday.

Coach Carlo Ancelotti, on paper, has not matched previous boss Pep Guardiola's run to three Champions League semi-finals with Bayern but could not fault his players, saying, "We came very close to the semi-finals".

Bayern players argue with Referee Viktor Kassai after he showed a second yellow card to Arturo Vidal, left, during the Champions League quarterfinal second leg soccer match between Real Madrid and Bayern Munich at Santiago Bernabeu stadium in Madrid, Spain, Tuesday April 18, 2017.

“In a quarterfinal you have to put a better referee, or it is the moment to introduce video refereeing, which is what UEFA are trying because there are too many errors.”. Systematic bias is hard to prove but it would be odd if the combination of status (and the subtle pressure that comes with it), home advantage (the best teams play at the biggest grounds) and the simple mechanics of the game would not have a discernible effect on refereeing.

Bayern Munich must finish out their season without their starting goalkeeper. Real Madrid had chances to go on top first but missed out on a few chances.

A weird Sergio Ramos own goal forced the extra period after Robert Lewandowski opened the scoring for Bayern from the penalty spot and Ronaldo equalised.

Bayern were defeated 4-2 after extra-time at the Bernebeu and Neuer injured his foot in the build up to Cristiano Ronaldo's third goal. Take a look at our list of five hilarious memes to celebrate Real Madrid's win. "It goes both ways, that is football". Madrid are used to suffering.

"I'm not asking them to name streets after me, the only thing I ask is that they don't boo me here", Ronaldo told Spanish TV station Antena 3. "Anything can happen. We talked about other things".
